We often ignore this fact, since the "Boxing Movie" is basically long dead now, but when it came out, this was a standard hollywood. The earliest and biggest problem with Raging Bull was that it was just so damn generic. This means that if you're looking for unbiased, strongly critical analysis, you've come to the wrong neighbourhood etc etc. I should briefly say that Scorsese is probably my favourite filmmaker of all time, and I consider his work with Schoonmaker to be some of the greatest filmmaking of the 20th (and 21st) century. (same is apparently true for the flashbulb noise that Scorsese is so fond of - each one gets a different sound effect.) And there are a lot of punches in this movie. Scorsese used a different sound effect for every damn punch. Usually boxing movies record ten or so punches and then just mix them up.

Until then, here's a brief anecdote about Raging Bull, which isn't exactly about editing, but is sorta in the same ball park: Every single punch in that film uses a different sound effect. I'm super tired right now, but will post a massive rant about how amazing Scorsese and Schoonmaker are tomorrow morning, if I remember.
